In today’s rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), we seem to be standing at a historic crossroads. On the one hand, AI technology is changing our world with its unparalleled speed and depth, from improving productivity to unlocking new ways of life, it brings us endless imagination and expectations. However, on the other hand, there is a growing trend towards centralised AI, which raises a series of deep-seated concerns about data privacy, employment impacts, social injustice and more. In this paper, we will explore the potential risks of centralised AI and why decentralised, open and democratised AI systems are a more desirable future.

With the trend towards centralised AI, the knowledge gap between policymakers and AI researchers has been cleverly exploited to sell a sci-fi filled future. However, this future may not be as rosy as we think. In the post-LLM data era, where data is pervasively stolen and exploited, our privacy and security face unprecedented challenges. It’s time to pull up the drawbridge, strengthen enforcement of copyright laws, and implement strict GPU access controls and code censorship.

However, high compliance costs will make it difficult for new entrants to the market to gain a foothold, further exacerbating the oligopoly. At the same time, closed-source AI models become the privacy of large corporations and are no longer a shared asset of society. This opaque development allows new technologies to emerge explosively from the black box, too late for us to prepare and discuss their far-reaching implications.

The digital divide is also growing under the centralised system of AI. Those who can afford expensive AI models will gain an unrivalled advantage, while the majority will be stuck with restricted, cue-based models. This inequality will further exacerbate social injustice and polarisation.

More worryingly, a large amount of cheap labour is used for data annotation and content filtering in the development and training of AI models. Their work is often ignored while their value is injected into low circulation junk coins. This modern exploitation of slave labour not only disenfranchises them, but also gives us deep concerns about the future of AI.

The deepest problem with centralised AI is its legal obligation – to maximise shareholder value by any means necessary. This profit-driven value runs counter to the needs of human nature. If the future of the AI-mediated world is driven by maximising shareholder value, then we risk falling into a world of injustice and exploitation.

However, even in such dire circumstances, we can still see a silver lining. Over the past decade, we have been building the tools needed to decentralise, open and democratise AI systems. These tools will allow us to steer the course of AI and ensure it serves the common good of humanity.

A decentralised AI system means that ownership and control of data will be returned to individuals and communities. In this model, data will no longer be the private property of a few companies, but will become a public resource that drives social progress and innovation. At the same time, decentralised AI will also foster more collaboration and innovation, as people will be able to share knowledge and resources more easily.

In addition, decentralised AI systems will help solve the employment problem. As the development of AI is no longer controlled by a few companies, more innovators and small businesses will have the opportunity to participate in the development and application of AI. This will create more jobs and drive economic prosperity and growth.

AI could be one of the best things that has ever happened to us, but it could also be a tool for our destruction. We must choose the direction of AI carefully to ensure it is in line with human values and interests. Decentralised, open and democratic AI systems are the way for us to achieve this. Let’s work together to break the prison of AI and create a better future.
